Sam Humphrey

I have over 20 years’ experience of working in the coaching industry.  I have been both a custodian of coaching in my role as Global Head of Coaching at Unilever and a supplier of high quality, professional coaching services to several sectors.

In both my coaching and supervision work, I experience each client making an unique contribution to their work through both their intent and their personal impact. My role is to support and challenge my clients to be fully aware of their thoughts and actions to ensure that the contribution they make is aligned to what they set out to achieve.

Supervision experience

I have been supervising groups and individuals for over a decade and the focus of this work is ever changing.  I have completed a Doctorate in Coaching Supervision and my research focused on the work an experienced coach takes to supervision.

In addition to supervisor independent coaches on a one to one and group basis, I have extensive experience of supervising internal coaching faculties and enjoy the nuances, challenges and opportunities that face internal coaches.

Coaching experience

The focus of my coaching is to support leaders and their teams to increase their impact at an intellectual, cognitive, emotional and behavioural level. I work to help people explore what they need to learn and unlearn to enable them to deliver improved business and personal performance.

I have worked in various sectors which together with my professional coach training has supported me in my work with many different clients and their varied issues. I enjoy working with clients to make meaning and difference to both the intellectual issues they face and their interpersonal relationships they have.

I believe that clients are more than capable of resolving their own issues and that coaching merely helps them get ‘unstuck’ by exploring various options that they can take to resolve their particular issue. I work in a transparent way with clients to ensure they leave with clarity on what and how coaching has helped them with their issue. This has the additional benefit of ensuring that clients do not become dependent on their coach or coaching, and they complete with a clear sense of ownership for their solution.

Business experience

I have coached business leaders and teams since 1996 and I have worked with people in a range of corporate, professional services and public sector organisations.

I am Managing Director of Grit Limited and a Director of Exceptional Achievement.

I have previously been a member of Faculty at Meyler Campbell on their Business Coach programme where I trained highly successful business people in professional coaching practice. My last corporate role was as Global Head of Coaching for Unilever where I worked as a member of the Global Leadership Learning Team to support the development of Unilever’s Leadership cadre. I also provided an internal consulting service on how to effectively support organisational change, leadership development and talent management activities.

My proudest achievement in this role was the development and implementation of a pioneering coach assessment and selection process that has attracted much external attention and resulted in me speaking at several conferences.

I am a founding member of the Editorial Board for Coaching at Work Magazine and was a member of the CIPD Coaching Advisory Board.  I am an award winning writer and have published coaching articles and research.
